I am an interdisciplinary artist and printmaker, living in Vermont since 1994. Inspired by the natural landscape I use imagination and memory to look beyond realism to make a statement about the pastoral landscape tradition in the 21st century. My work has evolved over the last year, combining my life-long interests in printmaking, drawing, sewing, love of paper and Asian art traditions, like the hanging scroll. July 11, 2009
Walnut Ink

I used a Sumi brush and Walnut ink while on vacation and plan to make some more of these little paintings.

Brush with Walnut Ink

6"x9"

As I packed for vacation I almost brought my full set of watercolors but decided on pulling this old bottle of ink out of mothballs and am really enjoying working with the medium.

Copy, Sharpie and White-out
5"x8"

This drawing is ready to be transferred to a block for carving. I really enjoyed the way the image simplified itself and I have worked on this off and on for about a month. I put it down for a few weeks and almost gave up on the image. I stared at it for a few hours while on vacation and it almost finished itself as I decided to just be bold.

Charcoal pencil

4.25"x6.5"

Took my students down to the river to paint and had a terrible allergic reaction. Had the worst skin rash in a decade but managed to power through another 2.5 hours of class. Did make this sketch and wrote a little poem about the experience of trying to draw and not scratch my arms off at the same time.

Charcoal pencil

Went on a Father's Day walk along the railroad tracks in East Hardwick. I had this spot in mind and have been thinking about making a print about this scene for some time now.

Late May

May 30, 2009

Watercolor

6"x9"

This painting is a lot more satisfying than the one I did the week before. If I keep at these i should be able to make up some ground from rusty mechanical things with my hands and the use of technique.

Dandelion Field

May 24, 2009

7"x10.25"

Watercolor and Pencil

Sat out in the field for the first time in many months with my box of watercolors. It was a beautiful spring morning with bright sun and a golden field of dandelions.

Charcoal Pencil

4.5"x6.5"

Went out for a walk on my lunch break and wandered up the Taylor Farm Road in Plainfield, Vermont. Found this spot up in a cow field and I plan to go back once the leaves come in full and strong in a couple of weeks.

2-plate block print

I will start to sew four of this prints together this week. Each of the four prints has a different set of letterpress text under the image and will be exhibited this summer at the Sullivan Museum of Norwich University.

Plexi Drypoint
5"x7"

This little print has become my example plate for my students when I am explaining the Plexiglas Drypoint technique. I pulled this proof very quickly and I am surprised at how well it came out. Every time I print it I have scratched the plate a little more and it is coming along...
